Great Basin Jazz Camp – Junior/Middle School Edition

July 15th – July 18th 2008

9AM – 12 Noon (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday)

4PM – 8PM (Rehearsal & Friday Evening Concert)

 

AIMS – GOALS – OBJECTIVES


The primary objective of this jazz camp is to provide students with a performance knowledge of the jazz genre and its related styles as it applies to stylistic interpretation, sight-reading, small and large jazz ensembles, and solo improvisation. The camp is designed to provide each student the opportunity to perform at a more competent level of musicianship. Small group classes as well as one-on-one instruction will be provided to encourage each student.


  1. Improvises (constructs) a jazz solo

  2. Contrasts different styles of jazz genres as it applies to improvisation -- i.e. Latin, Swing, and Rock

  3. Utilizes sight-reading skills in small and large ensemble rehearsals

  4. Identifies and applies scales & chords both aurally and visually to improvisation

  5. Identifies musical form as 32-bar song form or 12-bar blues

  6. Performs with more skill and dexterity on musical instrument

  7. Creates jazz “licks” for use in jazz solo

  8. Exhibits a willingness to practice and apply concepts learned

  9. Practices basic instrument maintenance care

  10. Attends with promptness all classes and rehearsals

  11. Prepares for each class and rehearsal with instrument, music, and a pencil for taking notes/marking music

  12. Applies proper breathing, intonation, tone, and phrasing in jazz performance

  13. Recognizes the need to listen to others in jazz ensemble – i.e., rhythm, pulse, chord progressions, style

  14. Recognizes the need to listen to great jazz artists as a model of reference in style, phrasing, and tone




A unique opportunity for middle and junior high Jazz band students to dramatically improve their skills and learn from working professionals in a non-competitive learning and FUN atmosphere. Get a jump on next year. Be prepared for entry into your high school band.


Classes begin at 9AM SHARP - Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday and end at 12 Noon

Final Dress Rehearsal and Concert Performance – 4PM to 8PM - Friday

COST IS $150 DOLLARS FOR THE 3 ½ DAY CAMP


EVERY STUDENT COMPLETING CAMP WILL RECEIVE A “DIPLOMA OF ACHEIVEMENT” AT THE GRADUATION CEREMONY IN SWAYNE AUDITORIUM ON THE N.N.U. CAMPUS DURING THE FINAL CAMP CONCERT JULY 18TH 2008.

THE CONCERT BEGINS AT 6:30PM.


SPECIAL AWARD FOR “MOST IMPROVED STUDENT” WILL ALSO BE PRESENTED.
