BILL WATROUS
Grammy
nominee Jazz Trombonist BILL WATROUS has carved out an impressive career for himself, performing with jazz greats including
Woody Herman, Roy Eldridge, and Count Basle. He has been voted the "Number One Jazz Trombonist" in Downbeat Magazine's
readers' poll seven years in a row and has won the magazines Critics Award twice. BILL WATROUS is considered to be one
of the greatest trombone virtuosos of all time. His talent is truly staggering. The late esteemed critic Leonard Feather had
this to say about him when he first heard him in Los Angeles:
"Bill
Watrous proceeded to astonish everyone in the packed room ... his attractively polished tone, rare command of the instrument,
and surprised packed melodic lines put him in a class of his own. There are occasional excesses when he will soar into a sudden
high note foray seemingly just to show off his
technique, but such moments are rare. Besides, his ballads, played with a superlative sense of phrasing, offer reminders that his melodic gifts are the
equal of his virtuosity':
In
addition to an active schedule of performances at colleges and high schools across the country, BILL WATROUS is one of the
most "in demand" Los Angeles studio musicians and has recorded nineteen solo albums. His album, "The Tiger
of San Pedro (released on Columbia Records) was nominated for a Grammy in the category of Best Performance by a Large Jazz
Ensemble. He has also been a guest soloist on countless albums by other prominent jazz musicians throughout his career such
as Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, Freddie Hubbard, Auturo Sandoval, Michel Legrand, and others too numerous
to mention. In addition, one of Bill's projects included his big band playing with the very successful jazz-rock group
Chicago on their album "Night and Day".
Born in Middletown,
Connecticut, BILL WATROUS, became interested in music at an early age. The son of 1940's Big Band Trombonist Ralph Watrous,
Bill began to play trombone at the age of six. " I learned through
osmosis," says Bill. He would perform with his father at local gigs. He played in grade school but could not read music.
Watrous was in his high school's jazz band or "swing band" as it was known and then joined the Navy Music Program
in Unit Band 186. His unit band played throughout the Orient and performed stateside. He was then transferred to Brooklyn
and begin to sit in with local bands.
Watrous was anxious to get his career underway and after his discharge from the Navy; he stayed
in New York City. His big break came when he joined Kai Winding Septet's "Four Trombone and Rhythm section"
tour. His performances led to studio work including recording with Quincy Jones as well as others. Although studio work was rewarding
for Watrous, he missed the thrill of playing for live audiences and left to perform and tour with the-Woody Herman Band.
Once again, BILL WATROUS, enraptured audiences with, his incredible talent and
impressive abilities. His unique style led to a staff musician position with the Merv Griffin Show, the Ed Sullivan Show and
later, the Dick Cavett Show. His television and studio work in New York City gave him a steady income to assemble his own
big band, the critically acclaimed "Manhattan Wildlife Refuge."
BILL WATROUS is today considered to be a master craftsman. He has
influenced an entire generation of trombone players. He is one of the very few musicians that are admired by both the jazz
and the classical music communities. He continues' to make strides as a trombonist and continues to amaze audiences. He
recently received a four-minute standing ovation at the Lionel Hampton Jazz festival. Watrous was also the featured soloist
with the Glendale Symphony with special guest Tony Bennett.
Bill currently resides with his wife Mary Ann and their son
Jason in the Los Angeles area. He is doing exactly what he loves and only wants to do more. His career goals are right on
track. Bill has indicated that he would like' to do more extensive traveling and participate in more festivals as a soloist
or with his Big Band. Bill Watrous is currently a Professor of Music at the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California
(USC).
Bill Watrous plays Bach Stradivarius trombones exclusively. Bill currently is playing a Bach Stradivarius LT] 6M
trombone. The instruments used by Bill Watrous are manufactured by the Selmer Company, Inc., P.O. Box 310, Elkhart, IN 46515-0310.
Bill Watrous is an exclusive clinician for Selmer/Bath.
